Late this afternoon, we hit 4,000 US military deaths in Iraq. Tomorrow,
we will need a lot of people to be at SF Civic Center at 7 PM

It's going to be a solemn event, no banners/posters save those of VFP,
its affiliated American Legion Post 315 and other Posts along with a
board with all the casualties in Iraq. We have planned to read the
1,000 names since the "Ties to Remember" reading that took place
    January 1, 2007.

At the begining we will give time to people who have lost loved ones,
words from clergy and the lighting of candles.

Contact: Bill Schwalb can be reached at home at (415) 285-5627 till mid-afternoon.

today i told my coworkers at the school that i really love my life right now, because a couple times a week, i feel like, "wow! that was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!" how's that for good!

last night, trisha and i got to see the color of fear on the big screen at a church in oakland, and after it was over, 5 of the men from the film filed on stage for a panel discussion. so good.

the night before, we had a small but fruitful young adult friends conversation, and the night before i had a good conversation with one of the people from the agency i work for. i love conversations and learning from people, i think is the point.

cubbie, you like solitude. that's good. you learn a lot there. but you also learn a lot from other people and their experiences. so don't isolate. kthx.

at work. guy just told me his cat died. he was buying cook's illustrated. i asked if he was going to make some comfort food. he said, "no. i just don't know what i'm going to do. i can't cry anymore. i've already cried for 3 hours." he was this very stoic seeming man in a business suit. poor guy. i had no idea what to do with that except sympathetic faces.

    ***

a guy on the bus yesterday was raving about "solomon and galore."

    ***

a guy on the bus today was going around telling people he was their savior and telling children they were keys to the kingdom.

watching the anne of green gables dvd-- special features and all.

just watched the weird missing footage that was prefaced with a note about how it was only shown in the german production of the film. it's all with mrs. allan (the minister's wife)-- who has a thick european accent. and all of the footage is about how she's a weird foreigner but anne loves and accepts her. very strange.

i have just realized how much jonathan crombie (gilbert) reminds me of rickie from "my so-called life."

    [info]lobsterbox asked me about these.
things attached to suitases - basically if you take anything and make it portable and stuck inside a suitcase, i will love it. i mostly know of typewriters and record players like this, but i mean, i think if you put a washing machine in a suitcase, i would covet it.

sarasota - i mean, i was there. for 3/4 of my life. of course i'm interested in it. ps, i was thinking about the bookstore at gulf gate mall the other day. and how it felt endless to me. and how they had not all of the series i wanted but then some that others didn't have. and THEN i started thinking about paperback booksmith at sarasota square and its squeaky floor. and i was like, "i MUST tell [info]lobsterbox!"

paint on my glasses - when i have tempera paint on my glasses, i feel like a real teacher.

beets - i only recently discovered them. my preschool made us eat pickled beets and i thought they were atrocious, so i avoided them. and then i had them roasted with a little soy sauce, and now i am obsessed. and they are so ALIVE! they bleed and are so much in your system when you eat them.... and then you poop red!!!

divine decadence - it's a phrase from cabaret that i really like. even if i am a quaker!

photographs of strangers - we get a lot of these in the books at the bookstore. they are fantastic. and i buy them at thrift stores sometimes. i love making up stories and personalities and making them mine.

60s Disney main titles - like the parent trap! or any of those where they have the fake fairy tale book? very aesthetically appealing to me.

    earthquake.

    5.6.

    i was totally unaware.

i think at the time, my coworker was shaking a copy of 2012: the return of quetzlcoatl and telling me i had four years and 2 months left! or maybe i was looking at the back and seeing that the mayan calendar does not tell us that the world will end then, but there will be a cosmic shift...

"The guest room happened to contain a sizable collection of BSC novels; I spent an hour reading Claudia and the Sad Goodbye, and by the time I reached its end, I felt much better. I was nineteen years old. By then, I needed more from books than the BSC could provide — but what they could provide, I still needed."

Baby-Sitters Club Reading Group Tuesday 8/7!
So.... let's talk about Jessi and Mallory? Who did you like more? Why? Were they a good match as friends? Who had better fashion sense-- or why do we know nothing about their outfits, unlike the rest of the group?

This month, we're going to focus, not on a specific book, but on two characters who are in most of the books, so you don't have to read anything specific-- just come with your general Baby-Sitters Club love and knowledge. This conversation can touch on many themes-- horse stories, ballet, race relations, how old you have to be to be a competent baby-sitter, why Mallory always looks like a young transguy in the film representations-- it's all up to the group who shows up! So show up!

The discussion will be at Dog Eared Books on 900 Valencia Street, on Tuesday the seventh at 8:00 pm. Hope to see you there!

i'm reading night watch by sarah waters (author of tipping the velvet and fingersmith) right now. i've just started it, but i'm liking it a lot. it's really really making me want to watch a long british film. i'm not joking.

    Mary Anne hates conflict.
Just a friendly reminder that this Tuesday at 8, we'll be having the Baby-Sitters Club reading group at Dogeared Books, on 20th & Valencia. You can come fresh from reading the novel or graphic novel, or just ready to reminisce about your reading experiences. (Just as a refresher-- this is the one with the "Baby-sitters Agency" the sinister 8th-graders who are trying to take away the Club's business! It's also where we learn for the first time how Stacey feels about her diabetes.) There will be beer and snacks and F-U-N.

    Come discuss:
    The exotification of Asian femininity,
The complicity of white allies in the racism of their peers,
    Stereotypes of butch lesbians,
The emasculation of Southern boys in the North,
The internalization of images of disability,
& the disgusting way Alan Gray eats a sandwich!

    Peace Vigil & Die-In
This Thursday, and every Thursday, there is a peace vigil from noon to one, in front of the Federal Building on Golden Gate and Larkin.

Afterwards, this Thursday (and the first Thursday of every month) there will be a die-in after the vigil.

Also, in the same location, Josh Wolf's father is holding a vigil to bring awareness of his son. Stop by and say hi (he has plenty to say).

oh, and ps, i've reached my summer reading goal. plus one. and it looks like i will be able to read at least 3 more books before the end of the time... but since my internet is spotty, i'll post my reviews now.

    1. A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass
"I think he's been hanging out at the Roths' house lately, sniffing around the new cat, Twinkles. I don't know which is more embarassing: Mango having a crush on the cat, or the fact that the cat's name is Twinkles."Read more... )

    2. J. M. Barrie & the Lost Boys: The Love Story that Gave Birth to Peter Pan by Andrew Birkin
[J. M. Barrie] "Peter's mother thinks Mr. BArrie has a lot of people admiring him, but oh, Peter's mother, u are mistaken and he is a lonely dreary person and is very pleased to hear that someone thinks him nicer than he is..."Read more... )

    3. the moffats by eleanor estes
"From time to time, the children walked through the empty rooms, feeling strange. The yellow house was no longer their home. Later on it would live in their memories alive and glowing again like the coals that used to fall in the grates. But now, today, it was unfamiliar. Their footsteps echoed on the wooden floors. Where the pictures had hung were clean squares of wallpaper. Every so often one or another of the four Moffats ran to steal a look at Mama to see if she, too, had changed."Read more... )

    4. rabble starkey by lois lowry
"When Dorothy got back to Kansas from being in Oz? She probably just went back to school same as always, and took spelling tests and played kickball at recess, I expect."Read more... )

    5. The Brave Little Toaster by Thomas M. Disch
"But before any of the small appliances who may be listening to this tale should begin to think that they might do the same thing, let them be warned: ELECTRICITY IS VERY DANGEROUS. Never play with old batteries! Never put your plug in a strange socket! And if you are in any doubt about the voltage or the current where you are living, ask a major appliance.Read more... )

    6. Bridget Jones's diary by Helen Fielding

    9. a man without a country by kurt vonnegut
"Human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many lifeless bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas."Read more... )

    10. Architecture for Beginners by Louis Hellman
"The International Functional style was used all over the world as a tool of governments and powerful groups to destroy traditional culture and impose Western-inspired industrialisation. In this respect modern architecture is the most successful movement in the history of architecture!"Read more... )
